PREGNANCY, CHILDBIRTH AND THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

During my Alexander Technique Training I became pregnant and gave birth to my daughter, Ava.

During pregnancy I learned at my Alexander Technique Training, how to adapt to the physical changes.  I learned how to sit in a way that is safe for yourself and your baby, how to stand, walk, bend, and lie down with my growing belly. Many women get physical inconveniences as lower back pain, shoulder and neck pain, as their weight changes and shifts. The body changes so quickly and it’s very hard to know how to adapt to that without anyone’s help.

My breathing had also improved with the Technique, which came to benefit me during the delivery. They often teach you in birthing courses how to ‘puff.’ I learned with The Alexander Technique how to let my breath free. My awareness grew and I could notice when I was tensing my muscles.

For example: When you are in labor and in pain, you often tend to tighten muscles in your face, making grimaces. Now when you gain awareness of yourself doing that and choose to release that tension, your muscles ‘down there’ can also release. This helped me give birth to my daughter in an easier way. I didn’t need to use any pain medication.

I was so lucky to have an Alexander Teacher at my daughter’s birth. She helped me a great deal by reminding me to use the Alexander Technique. It proved how the Alexander Technique works on so many different levels at the same time.
